Classic Car Air Conditioning Repair, Restoration and Modernisation
Do you own the classic car of your dreams—but find yourself sweating in it all summer?
Driving a classic car should be an experience. The sound of the engine, the distinctive smell of the interior, the unique shapes, and the feeling that no modern car can replicate.
Then summer arrives.
While sitting in traffic, the cabin becomes increasingly hot, the air conditioning barely cools, and in certain models, even the engine coolant may begin to boil if you continue using a struggling A/C system. Eventually, you are forced to choose: switch off the air conditioning that is blowing only mildly cool air but still provides some comfort, or continue risking engine overheating.
You did not work for years to obtain the classic car of your dreams only to be unable to use it comfortably during the summer.
Widi Automotive specialises in the repair, restoration, and modernisation of air conditioning systems in classic cars.
Our goal is to ensure that your classic car is not only beautiful, but also genuinely usable on the hottest summer days.
Classic Car Air Conditioning Systems
In addition, classic car air conditioning systems typically suffer from several problems:
Perhaps one of the most important issues is that these systems were not designed for modern urban traffic or today’s weather conditions. At the same time, no matter how much we appreciate the authentic classic-car experience, we have become accustomed to the comfort provided by modern vehicles.
This is why problems with a classic car’s air conditioning system must be approached as a complete system.
The cause of every problem must be identified and eliminated. If the refrigerant has escaped, there is a reason. If the system only cools while the car is moving, there is a reason. If the engine overheats when the air conditioning is switched on, there is a reason for that as well.
We do not simply treat the symptoms. We identify the source of the problem, repair it, and where necessary, use modern solutions to improve the system’s efficiency.

Air Conditioning System Assessment and Diagnostics
We assess the current condition of the system, review previous repairs, identify leaks, and determine the true cause of poor performance. We locate leaks by pressure-testing the system. Based on the results, we prepare a detailed, itemised quotation.

Air Conditioning Repair, Complete Restoration and Modernisation

The work may include:

partial or complete disassembly,

thorough internal and external cleaning,

replacement of the required components,

the installation of modernisation solutions where necessary, such as an additional cooling fan or a more advanced electronic control system,

reassembly and pressure testing to ensure that the system is properly sealed,

charging the system with R134a refrigerant,

testing and inspection,

ozone treatment of the cabin, air conditioning, heating, and ventilation systems.

The internal cleaning of the system is necessary because the old compressor oil is not compatible with the new refrigerant. The entire system must therefore be flushed thoroughly. The cabin heat exchanger and evaporator must also be cleaned to remove unpleasant odours, mould, and other contaminants.

We also design and install air conditioning solutions for classic cars that were not originally equipped with air conditioning.

We Look Beyond the Air Conditioning System
In a classic car, the air conditioning, engine cooling, and electrical systems are closely interconnected.
The A/C compressor places an additional load on the engine, while the condenser is usually positioned in front of the engine radiator. While driving, natural airflow helps cool both systems. However, at idle in summer traffic, the available airflow can easily become insufficient. This is why many vehicles arrive at our workshop with both air conditioning and engine overheating problems.
At Widi Automotive, air conditioning repair is therefore not treated as an isolated mechanical task.
Where necessary, we inspect and coordinate:
Ez teszi lehetővé, hogy a klíma ne csak országúton, hanem alapjáraton és városi forgalomban is hatékonyan működjön, miközben a motor hőmérséklete stabil marad.
Modern Comfort While Preserving the Car’s Original Character
When modernising a classic car, our goal is not to turn it into a modern vehicle.
We aim to ensure that:
- the original controls are retained,
- no visually intrusive switches are added to the dashboard,
- new components match the appearance of the vehicle,
- and modifications remain hidden wherever possible.
Modernisation should improve usability—not alter the character of the car.

Real-World Results
Following the complete restoration and modernisation of the air conditioning system in a 1969 Mercedes-Benz 280 SL, we tested the vehicle in direct sunlight, at idle, with the air conditioning switched on.
The measured results were:
the cabin temperature dropped from 26°C to 18°C within eight minutes,
at maximum performance, the system delivered air at temperatures as low as 4°C,
the engine temperature remained stable even with the air conditioning operating.
Ez nem egy egyszerű klímatöltés eredménye volt. A klíma, a motorhűtés, a légáramlás és az elektromos rendszer összehangolt fejlesztésére volt szükség.

Frequently Asked Questions
Every project is different, but most air conditioning restoration and modernisation projects take approximately 1–2 months from the time the vehicle arrives at our workshop.
Throughout the project, we keep our clients regularly informed about the progress, discuss any newly discovered issues, and obtain approval before carrying out any additional work. Our goal is to make the entire process transparent and predictable from start to finish.
Every project is unique, so we always prepare an individual quotation after inspecting the vehicle.
As a general guideline:
- Labour: typically EUR 2400 to 3500 (incl. VAT) for the modernisation of an existing complete air conditioning system.
- Parts: typically EUR 300 to 1500 , depending on the condition of the existing components and the parts that need to be replaced.
For exceptional, rare, or high-value vehicles , parts costs alone may reach EUR 2,800 or more.
Based on the vehicle’s make, model, year of manufacture, engine type, and a brief description of the A/C system’s condition - such as whether it is working, not working, low on refrigerant, incomplete, or disassembled - we can provide an initial estimate by email.
Once the vehicle arrives at our workshop, we carry out a thorough inspection of the air conditioning system. You will then receive a detailed, itemised quotation for approval before any repair work begins.
